Santiago and Chile
Santiago has always been the capital of Chile, the bustling centre of this narrow country that stretches 4,000 miles along the western coast of South America. From a small pueblo, it has become one of the most modern cities on the continent. Much of Chile's cultural high points and history were played out in Santiago.
Perhaps one of the most striking things about Santiago is its backdrop - the white peaks of the Andes mountain range. The city nestles on a tract of flat land between two ranges - Chile's coastal mounts and some of the highest points in the Andes. This scenic topography also gives Santiago its biggest bane, trapping bus and car exhausts and the activities of more than five million people. Santiago thus breathes in a haze of brown smog.
Located far from other population centres (Sao Paulo is two and a half days away by bus), the most interesting part of Santiago nowadays is the mix of experiences you'll find here. Santiago has two districts - the working-class west and the affluent east. You'll find prices in nightlife stops and other establishments corresponding with the address of their clientèle.
As Chile's economy has steadily grown since the 1980's, many international businesses have put up their South American headquarters in Santiago, adding to its cosmopolitan character. At the same time, Santiago was the first stop for many of the country's immigrants from a century ago, a melting pot that contributed to Chile's cultural homogeneity.
