Santiago vacations and holiday tour packages
Chile vacation packages can be bundled with airfare and transfers. From Santiago, you can choose to go to the ski resorts, or go to the coast to Valparaiso and then on to Easter Island's Polynesian relics. Nature lovers can go whale-watching, fly fishing, or join a cruise to the Galapagos islands, although Peru and Ecuador are the nearer land points. Chile's countryside also offers an experience of its many food exports, especially its vineyards and wineries.
Australians need only a passport valid for six months more and around $ 60 US dollars to get a visa upon entry into Chile. The pass is good for up to 90 days.
Travel options to and around Santiago
Santiago is Chile's air link to the world, and flights operated by Quantas, Argentinian Airlines and LAN (Chile's flag carrier) now serve Sydney and Melbourne up to six times a week. All flights make a stopover in Auckland, and take a total of 16 hours going to Santiago. The flight back takes about 18 hours. Student travellers in Australia can enjoy airfare discounts.
Large buses connect Santiago to all the major South American capitals. If you're already touring in South America, going by bus is a good way of saving on your Chilean vacation.
The metro is served by an extensive subway system, with five routes, and still expanding. You'll also find taxis and buses operating all day. If you're going out for the nightlife in the more upscale areas, taxis will be your only option to get home. Colectivos are another breed of taxi cab, but they collect and drop off passengers along preset routes. You'll find the route sign on their roofboards.
From Santiago, you can take buses to other Chilean cities. Hitchhiking is also an acceptable way for tourists to get around. Just be prepared to wait for hours on quiet roads. On the other hand, it's hard to catch a ride on the busy freeways. |
